House Canada 1.0 uses simple materials to accomplish a simple goal, to create a multitude of spaces for an extended group of people, on a minimal lot. Canada 1.0, is the first in a series of retreats on small rural sites, where connection to nature is of paramount importance. The primary objective of the design is to function as a home that can welcome extended friends and family. On a tight site, the challenge becomes creating both shared and private spaces that connect with nature in various ways. By creating two distinct structures, exterior yards are defined by the buildings themselves, and work to create areas that can be used for a variety of functions. The shape and structure of the houses themselves also create raised exterior patios. Each bedroom has a private patio, with a large shared rooftop patio that overlooks the surrounding forest.
